Update 9/20

Sorry for the delay in my updates. School is in full swing and finding time for anything between classes, band, college applications and flight lessons is proving difficult. Nonetheless I am thoroughly enjoying my senior year. My training is going great. I’ve included a flight track from one of my recent lessons (as a picture because I had trouble with the Google Earth file), which have been a lot of pattern work and perfecting my landings. I should be soloing within the next two weeks for which I am both excited and nervous. On the musician side of things, myself and a few members of our high school jazz band have gotten together to form a jazz combo, in which we will play everything from classic jazz standards to contemporary arrangements (if we can find the time to rehearse). I look forward to posting some musical updates in the near future.

  1. Drew, looking forward to a very special, exciting post soon….!!! Keep going, you’re almost there. Congratulations!

  2. Thanks for the update . . . keep at it . . . one day at a time . . . I remember my first solo in Feb 1976 in a TH-55 helicopter. Almost 40 years later and I’m still at it! Would love to see a video clip of your jazz combo when able . . . no rush . . . I’m very happy to have a young Flying Musician like you join our ranks, and hope to meet you someday. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

  3. I am looking forward to following your continuing saga. Music and airplanes. It just doesn’t get much better than that.
I know it is challenging to juggle school along with everything else, but it sounds like you have the right attitude. “Press on regardless.”

  4. Keep at it, Drew. My all-time favorite logbook entry was about the sixth line down on the first page: “Seven landings; four survivable.”

Make ’em all survivable, and you’ll solo.

FWIW, I’m happy to see a new airman in the making; I’m proud of you.

  5. So proud Drew. I wish you much luck in completing your solo. My first solo was in a Navy T-34 at Soffley field in Pensacola Fl. My next solo was in an Aeronca Champ the next day at Ferguson field in Pensacola. I felt confident but a little nervous. Have fun and you will do fine.

  6. That’s quite alot of pattern work! Congratulations on your progress to date. Can’t wait to hear about your solo. I still remember mine: 3 landings as follows:
    1) lousy
    2) ok
    3) good
I soloed in a Cessna 150, and they are built to take the abuse of the first solo landing!
Keep up with the progress with pics and flight logs -the airport I learned at no longer exists and I wish I had more photos from my training days.
    Good luck!
