Solo at last!

Finally, after three instructors, two planes, and one crazy year, I have soloed! Although I have faced many setbacks on my way to solo, it will forever be something I am unable to forget.

My solo flight was not what I expected it to be. As if having to fly a plane by myself for the first time wasn’t enough, I also had to avoid a Glider Academy and Skydivers at the airport. My biggest battle was getting accustom to the plane’s performance without the weight of my instructor. But, one go-around and four landings later, I had soloed and was thankful to be on the ground again! I would like to thank everyone who has been able to make this dream become reality and helping me through this past year!

I would also like to congratulate this year’s winners and encourage them to continue to pursue flying even when it seems the odds are stacked against you. The biggest lesson I have taken out of my whole experience is that being in the right plane and being paired with the right instructor can change your entire flight experience.

Again thank you to FMA for allowing me to begin my flight training and to all of its sponsors who have made all this possible!

  1. Congratulations!! Nearly thirty years, several thousand hours of flying later, I can close my eyes and still replay that flight almost entirely. You will too, enjoy the accomplishment and KEEP FLYING!!

  2. Congratulations! Way to go!! You will remember this day for the rest of your life -and it’s only the first step. You are now part of a very small group of men and women, and you should be very proud!

  3. Sarah,

Congratulations on your solo!!! I am stunned that an instructor would permit a first solo, or any soloing student operation, under those conditions. You went away above and beyond the call of that duty. There were 3 glider tows in the air at the time and the jumpers were landing all over the field. We all know that unpowered flight (gliders, parachutes) have the right of way over powered flight. I am amazed that you sorted that all out on your student solo and I commend you. Congratulations again 🙂

  4. Congratulations!! That’s so exciting! One step closer to obtaining your license! Hope you the best and wish you well!

  5. So very excited to hear the GREAT news. You are an awesome young lady! Wishing you all the success at Alabama. At least you stayed in the SEC. 😉
